Mercer Slough is one of the first things you may be interested to check out while visiting the Pacific Science Center. This 320-acre wetland nature park is full of diverse biological species to explore. This park can be ventured on by foot or by water. The three nature trails include Bellefields Loop Trail, Heritage Loop Train, and Periphery Trail. By water, adventurers can take a canoe or kayak down a water trail that flows from one side of the park to the other. Guided canoe tours are offered seasonally. A visitor center within the nature park offers displays about the history of Mercer Slough and educational displays about a variety of plant and wildlife species that can be found in the park. Each month the Mercer Slough visitors center features an artist that creates based on the inspiration of nature.
The Pacific Science Center puts great effort into contributing to the education of children in the community. All throughout the year, the Pacific Science Center offers a variety of award-winning camps for ages pre-k through 8th grade. Help your children ignite their curiosity through coding camps, animation camps, all-girls camps, sensory-friendly camps, and more. Each of the camps is made to encourage children to explore, experiment, and all around enjoy science.
Oftentimes a science museum may seem tailored towards sparking the interest of young people, but what about the adults? At the Pacific Science Center, many events and activities are hosted specifically and even exclusively for adults. Experiences such as attending a laser show at night or trying out virtual reality can be enjoyable experiences with or without kids. Enrich your mind by learning about the latest advances in science and technology, or come enjoy yourself at one of the many exclusive 21+ events. One adult favorite is learning how craft brews are made in the Seattle area then tasting the beer directly from the brewmasters themselves. Another favorite is enjoying a craft beer and then an IMAX film in one of the Pacific Science Center's state of the art theaters. Other adult events include a signature scientific wine tasting event, the New Year's Eve Spectra, learning the science of local distillers, listening to local experts of science and technology, or a summertime Theory party full of dancing, cocktails, and scientific creation competition.
When the Pacific Science Center was first established in the 60's, it featured many of the science exhibits that were made for the 1962 Seattle World Fair. The only original remaining exhibits today are "the Lens and Mirror machine and a suspended model of the Earth's moon (University of Washington)." Other original exhibits have been removed, revamped, and replaced.
